Who Can be Seen at the Clinic?

The Pediatric Chronic Pain Program (PCPP) provides an outpatient clinic that accepts referrals from doctors and nurse practitioners. If you could benefit from our clinic, we encourage you to ask your healthcare provider to make a referral.  The referral form is accessible here: Pediatric Chronic Pain Referral Form (pdf)

We assess each referral on a case-by -case basis to ensure that the PCPP is the best service to meet your needs moving forward. In general we see children and adolescents who:

  • Experience non-cancer related pain which has lasted longer than 3 months
  • Have had the cause and diagnosis of pain fully investigated
  • Experience pain that interferes with or impacts physical, emotional, or social functioning at home and/or school.
  • Are willing to participate and engage in intensive weekly treatment

There are many different types of chronic pain conditions in children and adolescents. Some of these include:

  • Chronic headaches
  • Chronic abdominal pain
  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain (body pain)
  • Chronic pain as a result of another medical conditions (e.g. Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sickle Cell Anemia)
  • Chronic pain that interferes with the ability to function at home or school
  • Medically unexplained pain
