Family Advisory Council Members

Family Advisory Council (FAC) membership is comprised of family and community members working together with health care professionals and leaders at McMaster Children's Hospital (MCH).

Council Membership

  • Family Advisors:
    • 8 – 12 voting parent/family advisors that further the interests and well-being of children and youth 
    • Family advisors represent a spectrum of experiences across MCH programs and sites
    • 1 representative from Youth Advisory Council
    • Co-chairs are appointed by members of FAC
  • Staff Advisors:
    • MCH President and/or delegate
    • Staff advisors include MCH staff, leadership and physician representation
    • Approximately 6 staff are members of FAC
  • Family Advisory Staff Liaison
    • 1 Family Advisory Staff Liaison

Terms of Office

Members are asked to commit to a one year term with possibility of renewal. The FAC will meet at least 6 times a year from September to June. Meetings are held in the evenings for about 2 hours at McMaster Children’s Hospital. Working groups are formed as needed.


  • Meetings can also be called at the discretion of the co-chairs and/or Staff Liaison
  • If at any meeting the chair and co-chair are not present, the members present may elect a chair for that meeting.
  • All meetings will be publicized internally 

Accountability/Reporting Relationships

The FAC makes recommendations to the President with respect to any matter affecting the establishment, development, and delivery of family-centred care for patients of the hospital and their families. The FAC Staff Liaison, as a resource for FAC, works with the FAC chairs, MCH President and MCH leadership to identify, coordinate and respond to family-centred care issues.

How to take part in the McMaster Children’s Hospital Family Advisory Council?

As valued members of the McMaster Children’s Hospital community, FAC Family Advisors play an active and important role in providing family perspective to leadership, physicians and staff. When we choose members, we take into consideration our goal to have a Council whose membership reflects the broad scope and diversity of the families using the facility. We want members to make a well-informed decision about their membership.

As part of our recruitment process, we invite prospective members to attend an interview with the Staff Liaison and FAC Chair to learn more about the Council and discuss their interest. Ultimately, membership appointment is a mutually agreed upon good fit by the applicant and Council leadership. While many of our members spend numerous years with the FAC, we ask that members commit to at least one year on the Council. We are a family-centred group and fully understand and support members’ need for flexibility.
