Communication Checklist

Use this checklist as a guide to help you decide whether your child may need help.

Children... 

At 3 to 9 months:

  • Wave bye-bye
  • Turn and look at noises (door bell, phone)
  • Make lots of sounds 

At 1 year:

  • Say 2-3 words other than "mama" and "dada"
  • Point to things they want
  • Look when name is called

At 1½ years:

  • Point to own toes, eyes, nose
  • Use 10 to 20 words, "juice", "up", "ball" 

At 2 years:

  • Use 50 or more words
  • Put 2 words together, "daddy home" 

At 2½ years:

  • Use lots of different words (100's)
  • Use short sentences, "daddy go work" 

At 3 years:

  • Use 3-4 word sentences, "he is running"
  • Can tell a simple story
  • Speech is easily understood 

At 4 years:

  • Use full sentences, "I am going to the park"
  • Can say most words correctly
  • Talk smoothly
