What Services Do We Provide?

During your first appointment you can expect to:

Your child may be sent for additional testing after your initial appointment with the FAST clinic. For example, an abdominal x-ray or blood work may be ordered and can be completed on the day of your visit. Other tests need to be booked at a later date.

Please note, your child may need a swallow study. This is a videotaped x-ray of your child’s feeding and swallowing. These studies  are done on Thursdays in the Diagnostic Imaging Department, second floor by the yellow elevators. Your child WILL NOT be having a swallow study at their initial assessment with the FAST clinic. If deemed appropriate and necessary, it would then be booked for a later date.

What Should You Bring to the Clinic?

Interdisciplinary Team:

Gastroenterologist:

The Pediatric Gastroenterologist will review your child’s medical history and identify issues that impact on feeding and swallowing. A specific focus will be on GI issues, such as reflux and constipation.

Registered Dietitian:

The dietitian will help identify your child’s caloric intake (oral or by tube), rate of weight gain or loss, fluid requirements and vitamin and mineral needs. She/he will then determine your child’s caloric requirements and may help to make adjustments to your child’s tube feeding schedule if appropriate. The clinic dietitian can liaise with your community dietitian to ensure continuity of care and effective communication of recommendations related to feeding, intake and growth.

Nurse:

The nurse is part of the multi-disciplinary FAST clinic. She/he will help assess your child and family needs. The nurse helps with communication to the physician and other team members, including any change of status in between follow up visits. She/ he provides information and support to help manage your child’s health at clinic visits and over the phone.

Occupational Therapist/Clinic Co-ordinator:

The clinic co-ordinator receives and triages all referrals and is available as a contact to review the services the FAST clinic can provide. The occupational therapist will conduct a clinical feeding and swallowing assessment, provide recommendations to improve safety or transition to more developmentally appropriate foods. If  the safety of your child’s swallow is of concern, the occupational therapist will arrange for a swallow study in radiology and be present to facilitate this assessment. The occupational therapist can liaise with your community therapists to ensure continuity of care and effective communication of recommendations related to feeding and swallowing.

Our philosophy is family-centered care. We strive to provide the best care possible.
